Dark Chocolate Avocado Cookies

It might be safe to say this is one of the healthiest desserts out there. Unless you’re one of those fruit-dessert people — and I am absolutely not one of those.

So my boss does this thing when she gets really stressed out — she incessantly clicks her pen over and over again. I seriously believe it is triggering a negative physiological response for me.

Pen-Clicking Anxiety Disorder. Is that in this year’s DSM?

It’s almost as bad as this other boss I had years ago who wore like 30 bangle bracelets on one arm. I could never concentrate in the meetings. All I could see were bangles. Bangles and head-nodding and these horrible one-liners about meeting sales goals, followed by a follow-up e-mail (from the meeting we just had) featuring low-resolution balloon clip art and subject lines including but certainly not limited to phrases like “YOU GET IN WHAT YOU PUT OUT!!!” and “GIVE IT 110%!!!”

It was sort of like the movie Office Space except not that funny.

A few months later I thought I landed a dream job at a high-end magazine writing advertising copy, but my over-bangled boss was a newborn kitten compared to the new one I traded her in for. In the end that didn’t work out either. But hey — trust the process, right?

So because these had no refined sugar involved — just sweetened with the pure goodness that is dark chocolate and raw honey — I decided I could take a pinch of powdered sugar and sprinkle it on top. I mean it was just a sprinkle and I knew the texture would be so good. Reminds me of these double chocolate cookies at the French bakery down the street from me. They dust powdered sugar on these ridiculously heavenly chocolate cookies. I couldn’t help myself. It was almost similar!

These were delicious with red wine. They are sort of a mix between a brownie and a cookie — super dense and rich and not too sweet. Maybe I should call them brookies. Kinda cute, right?

Added nuts or espresso powder would also be delicious here.

I tweaked the inspirational recipe I found here, at the smoothie lover blog, to include raw honey instead of coconut sugar and I used less. The sweetness in the dark chocolate and honey was enough. They are not going to be your Tollhouse cookies (brookies?) but they will do the trick if you want to indulge in something gooey and chocolate-y. She even has a version of these as brownies and I can totally see why. You will too.

Dark Chocolate Avocado Cookies

  • 1 medium, ripe avocado
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 bar dark, high quality, chopped dark chocolate
  • 1/3 cup raw honey

Mix all ingredients together* and bake on parchment-lined baking sheet at 350° for 8-10 minutes. The smaller you make your cookies the less bake time they require. You want tem to just barely slide off the parchment.

* If you’re mixing by hand, start with the avocado and honey. Once mixed well, add the remaining ingredients. I used the back of a spoon but it was a bit of a workout. Mixer encouraged.
